What to Pack

Whether you are camping, glamping or staying at the lodge, we are giving you a head start on building your packing list.

  • Something to grill or cook on a stove top, or a side dish for group potlucks each day you are camping (estimate 30 people on Saturday). for breakfast and dinner.
    • You do not need enough to feed 30 people, just something family-sized to share (salad, dip and chips, hot dogs, coffee, eggs, bacon, fruit, etc.)

Drive Times

Anchorage folks:

Anchorage to Cantwell: About 200 miles (about 3.5 hours)

Paxson to Anchorage: About 260 miles (about 5 hours).

Fairbanks folks:

Fairbanks to Cantwell: About 150 miles (about 2.5 hours)

Paxson to Fairbanks: About 175 miles (about 3 hours).

 

Attractions

  • Beautiful scenery! Second-most beautiful drive IN THE WORLD, according to National Geographic.
  • Wildlife viewing: caribou, moose, bears AND MORE.
  • Alpine Creek Lodge. Half-way point, at Mile 68, possible spot to stay the night on Friday, if you are moseying your way along the route. Val has stayed here before. They have bunk rooms. Also, they have an active Facebook page.
  • Maclaren River Lodge, Mile 42. Burgers & Beer. Opens for breakfast at 7 a.m.
  • Don’t want to camp (like karaoke?)? Check out the Tangle River Inn. Now offering fresh pizza (2017)!

Tangle Lakes Campground

Located at mile 21.5 of the Denali Highway, Tangle Lakes Campground has 45 camping spaces. 

Cost: Each campsite is $12.

Reservations: Not an option.

Group camping sites: Yes, two.

Drinking Water: Yes

Dogs: Allowed, but must be on-leash at all times.
